COMMERCE, NAVY HOST
NATIONAL OCEAN CONFERENCE
The nation's leaders are
gathered in Monterey, Calif. this week for the National Ocean
Conference.
The conference, which runs
through June 12, is hosted by U.S. Commerce Secretary William
M. Daley and Navy Secretary John H. Dalton. They'll be joined
by both President Clinton and Vice President Gore to focus on
the future of our marine resources. During the conference, leaders
will be developing a vision of the country's ocean agenda for
the 21st Century that will be read on U.S. day (June 14) at the
Expo 98 at Lisbon's World Fair.
The timing of this conference is important because this is the
International Year of the Ocean. One of the things to come out
of this conference will be an official message to the world community
as it celebrates the Year of the Ocean.
This conference marks the first time that leaders from business,
government and the environmental community have gathered to discuss
the ocean and its future.
