An Internet Geographic Information System for Ocean Planning and Governance in the Southeastern United States.

The objective of this project is to build an integrated issue-driven Internet interface for accessing ocean data in order to facilitate ocean planning and governance in the Southeast. The primary target audience is coastal and ocean resources managers and secondly, the public. This project will provide easy access to information in a format that is conducive to comprehensive planning and management; that delivery format is an interactive Web-based GIS tool. Behind the tool is a framework that holds spatial information and its associated tabular attributes. (For more information on this project, contact the NOAA Coastal Services Center

SC Department of Natural Resources
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is the advocate for and steward of the state's natural resources. The Department develops and implements policies and programs for the conservation, management, utilization and protection of the state's natural resources based upon scientifically sound resource management, assessment and monitoring, applied research, technology transfer, comprehensive planning, public education, technical assistance and constituent involvement. The Department of Natural Resources is pro-active in protecting the state's natural resources for use and enjoyment by future generations of South Carolinian's.

Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine Biology and Coastal Research
The Baruch Institute is an international research organization. The Institute's primary purpose is to add to the basic and applied knowledge of the ecological and commercial values of the coastal and oceanic zones. The multidisciplinary approach utilized to accomplish this objective brings together researchers from the departments of Biological Sciences, Geological Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental Health Sciences, Statistics, and Geography, among others.

NOAA Sponsored Projects

South Carolina Sea Grant College Program

South Carolina Sea Grant College Program is a part of The National Sea Grant College Program which encourages the wise stewardship of our marine resources through research and education. Sea Grant is a partnership between the nation's universities and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Coastal Services Center

The mission of the Coastal Services Center is to provide information, education, and technology transfer to the coastal community for improved decision making.

For too long there has been a noticeable disconnect between our nation's scientific and technological capabilities and the ability to convert these capabilities into the information and tools that coastal management professionals need. The Coastal Services Center is dedicated to providing this link.

With a strong emphasis on partnerships, the Center works with local, state, and federal officials to determine specific coastal management issues or challenges. The Center helps these organizations by providing training, data, or information that was previously unavailable or under-utilized.

The Center's projects annually number at least 100. The Center also facilitates training programs and a nationwide coastal fellowship program. Data searches are enhanced through an Internet-base Coastal Information Directory and the Center's library.

Natural Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) Centralized Data Management Office (CDMO) was established in support of the System-wide CZM/NERRS Environmental Monitoring Program. The purpose of the CDMO, housed at the North Inlet-Winyah Bay, SC NERR, is the development, implementation and management of the basic infrastructure and data protocol to support the assimilation and exchange of data, metadata and information within the framework of NERRS sites, state coastal zone management programs and NOAA/OCRM, as well as other state and federally-funded education, monitoring and research programs.

North Inlet-Winyah Bay NERR features high quality, ocean-dominated waters and salt marshes in North Inlet, contrasting with the brackish waters and marshes of Winyah Bay. The Bay's estuary is dominated by riverine discharges from a watershed impacted by agricultural, municipal and industrial development. Former rice fields and canals provide another system for study within the Reserve.

Ace Basin NERR features outer coastal plain communities, typically associated with barrier islands, marsh islands, and estuarine rivers. It is especially rich in its diversity of endangered and threatened species.

National Weather Service Offices are located in Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville/Spartanburg.

The Southeast River Forecast Center (SERFC) is responsible for the production of river forecasts for all rivers that drain into the Atlantic Ocean along the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida as well as the rivers that drain into the Gulf Of Mexico from Mobile Bay to the southernmost tip of Florida. This is an area of almost 270,000 square Miles. Flood forecasting is the primary mission of the Southeast River Forecast Center However, SERFC has a busy slate of programs in wet or dry weather. Daily forecasts are used for a multitude of purposes and are issued for many points along the rivers of the Southeast. Extended Streamflow Prediction (ESP) is becoming a larger part of the forecast program as interest in long range water resources management increases in the area.
