A Little Rhode Island HistoryThe Some historical Rhode Island facts...
![]()
- Rhode Island's first permanent settlement was established at Providence in 1636. The royal charter of 1663 guaranteed complete religious liberty, established a self-governing colony with total autonomy
- Quakers, who merged with the Antinomians, established a meeting house on Aquidneck in 1657
- A major boundary dispute with Connecticut was resolved in 1726-27, and a very favorable settlement with Massachusetts in 1746-47 resulted in the annexation of Cumberland and Several East Bay towns, including Tiverton, Little Compton, Warren (which then embraced Barrington), and the port of Bristol.
- The precise date of Roger Williams (founder of RI) death is unknown, but it occurred sometime between January 16 and March 16, 1682-83
- ON MAY 4, 1776, two full months before the other twelve of the thirteen original colonies did so, independence from the mother country - Great Britain - was formally declared by the General Assembly of the Colony of Rhode Island. This bold and brave historic action created the first free republic in the New World.
- WHILE stirring speeches were being made by irate patriots in other colonies, Rhode Islanders, long before Lexington, Concord and Bunker Hill, carried on war; with the British - and the Rhode Island colonists drew the first blood. On July 9, 1764, sailors from H.M.S. Squirrel and Newporters fought with each other - cutlasses, clubs and stones were used with bruising effects
