Coastal America YOTO (Year of the Ocean) Lecture Series and the New England Aquarium present "From Moby Dick to Free Willy, Mammals in a Changing World," featuring Dr. John E. Reynolds, Chairman of the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission and leading marine mammal expert. Pre-registration is required as seating is limited.

A Little Massachusetts History

The Pilgrims landed here and founded America, the revolution started here which freed America, and NOAA Fisheries was born here in 1871 as the nation's first Federal conservation agency whose mission was and still is to help preserve Americas marine resources.

  • 1621 The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in Plymouth.
  • 1634 Boston Common became the first public park in America.
  • 1636 Harvard, the first American university, was founded in Newtowne (now Cambridge).
  • 1653 The first American public library was founded in Boston.
  • 1716 The first American lighthouse was built in Boston Harbor.
  • 1775 The first battle of the Revolution was fought in Lexington and Concord.
  • 1826 The first American railroad was built in Quincy.
  • 1876 The first telephone was demonstrated by Alexander Graham Bell in Boston.
  • 1898 The first American subway system was opened in Boston.
  • 1928 The first computer, a non-electronic "differential analyzer," was developed by Dr. Vannevar Bush of M.I.T. in Cambridge.

Woods Hole The Scenic Seaside Citidel of Science

The Northeast Fisheries Science Center which is part of NOAA Fisheries has an interesting history. It is where NOAA Fisheries got started back in 1871 as the U.S. Fish Commission.

The UMass/NOAA CMER Program is a Cooperative Agreement between the University of Massachusetts and NOAA which combines university and agency expertise to address marine issues affecting the Commonwealth, region, and nation.

 

Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary

 

Formed by retreat of glaciers from the last Ice Age, Stellwagen Bank at the the mouth of Massachusetts Bay forces an upwelling of nutrient-rich water from the Gulf of Maine leading to high productivity and a multi-layed food web with species ranging from single-celled phytoplankton to the great whales.

 

Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

Waquoit Bay NERR includes; South Cape Beach, a 500-acre State Park recreational area; Washburn Island with 330 acres and 11 camp sites; and the Sargent Estate headquarters. A 450-acre riverine pitch pine/scrub oak uplands tract protects the watershed.
