The World Deltas Symposium will be held in New Orleans from August 23-29, 1998.

All sessions will be held at the Hotel Intercontinental, 444 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130.

The purpose of the World Deltas Symposium is to inform scientists, engineers, and decision makers about available information and concepts needed for working and living in this dynamic environment. Internationally-recognized experts in the physical, biological, engineering, and socioeconomic disciplines will share their experiences and observations on the current state of deltas and assess how this information can help us meet the demands of the future. In addition to invited speakers, the symposium committee will select from submitted abstracts to create a program that extends beyond the classic domains. Attendees will hear presentations and have access to posters, exhibits, and displays on the more detailed elements and processes creating and comprising a deltaic environment. New Orleans, which owes its existence to the Mississippi River delta, offers a premier location for the symposium. Regional scientists will lead field trips and discuss ongoing research and issues facing one of the most studied deltaic systems.

All presentations will be made before the entire conference audience. Eight major populated deltas will be the focus of a morning or afternoon session. Internationally recognized experts who will present their work include Dr. D.J. Stanley (Nile), Dr. H.J. Walker (Arctic), Dr. Augustin Sanchez-Arcilla (Ebro), Dr. John Milliman (Ganges/Brahmaputra), Dr. Joost H. J. Terwindt (Rhine), Dr. Carlo Cencini (Po), and Dr. Xiqing Chen (Yangtzee). In addition, several papers will be presented on the Mississippi delta.

Submissions should focus on one of the following: (a) geologic framework; (b) natural/physical processes; (c) biological/ecological processes; (d) socioeconomic considerations; or (e) human influences. Each day, two major deltas will be presented, and papers that relate will be offered for the remainder of that session. If the subject of your paper is a delta that is not listed above, we will place your presentation where it will best fit.
