An Internet Geographic Information System for Ocean Planning and Governance in the Southeastern United States.

The objective of this project is to build an integrated issue-driven Internet interface for accessing ocean data in order to facilitate ocean planning and governance in the Southeast. The primary target audience is coastal and ocean resources managers and secondly, the public. This project will provide easy access to information in a format that is conducive to comprehensive planning and management; that delivery format is an interactive Web-based GIS tool. Behind the tool is a framework that holds spatial information and its associated tabular attributes. (For more information on this project, contact the NOAA Coastal Services Center

The Georgia Sea Grant College Program is a part of The National Sea Grant College Program which encourages the wise stewardship of our marine resources through research and education. Sea Grant is a partnership between the nation's universities and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary Just off the coast of Georgia, in waters 20 meters deep, lies one of the largest near-shore sandstone reefs in the southeastern United States. The area earned sanctuary designation in 1981, and was recognized as an international Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1986. Gray's Reef consists of sandstone outcroppings and ledges up to three meters in height, with sandy, flat-bottomed troughs between. Because of the diversity of marine life, Gray's Reef is one of the most popular sport fishing and diving destinations along the Georgia coast.

The Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve enables visitors to experience virtually every facet of a typical barrier island natural community, from the diversified wildlife of the forest uplands, to the vast expanses of Spartina marsh and the complex beach and dune systems. Exhibits and displays at the Sapelo Island Visitors' Center bring to life both the natural and cultural history of Sapelo Island, while public tours enable the visitor to experience the African-American community of Hog Hammock, the University of Georgia Marine Institute and the Reynolds mansion.

The Southeast River Forecast Center (SERFC) is responsible for the production of river forecasts for all rivers that drain into the Atlantic Ocean along the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida as well as the rivers that drain into the Gulf Of Mexico from Mobile Bay to the southernmost tip of Florida. This is an area of almost 270,000 square Miles. Flood forecasting is the primary mission of the Southeast River Forecast Center However, SERFC has a busy slate of programs in wet or dry weather. Daily forecasts are used for a multitude of purposes and are issued for many points along the rivers of the Southeast. Extended Streamflow Prediction (ESP) is becoming a larger part of the forecast program as interest in long range water resources management increases in the area.
