New London - June 20, 1998
Ocean98CT is holding a press kickoff to announce the events planned to celebrate Year of the Ocean (YOTO). This event takes place at University of Connecticut library, Avery Point campus. RADM Teeson, Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, has agreed to speak at this event along with two other speakers. Senior representatives from The Mystic Aquarium, The Mystic Seaport, Sea Grant, Long Island Sound Foundation, Marine Sciences Center at Avery Point (UCONN), and the regional media are invited to this VIP event.

The press kickoff will be followed by "Jazz By The Sea," a free jazz event held on the grounds of UCONN, Avery Point campus, and will feature the U.S. Coast Guard swing band "The Masters Of Swing." VIP invitees will be introduced, and an announcement about the YOTO events will be made from the stage prior to the performance by "The Masters Of Swing."

The United States Coast Guard Band performs a concert to celebrate "The Year Of The Ocean" on Sunday, October 11, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. This concert takes place in Leamy Hall Auditorium on the campus of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., and is free - no tickets are required.

The concert features music of the sea, with a special performance of W. Francis McBeth's "Of Sailors and Whales." This programmatic concert piece is in five movements, each of which is preceded by dramatic readings from "Moby Dick."

Preceding this concert will be a special display of exhibits by regional organizations and educational institutions involved with the ocean and the regional "Year Of The Ocean" celebration. These exhibits will be in the lobby of Leamy Hall and will be open to the public the hours preceding the concert.

Dr. Roger S. Payne is a world renown marine mammal behavior specialist and President and Founder of the Whale Conservation Institute. Dr. Payne is most recognized for his research on humpback whales and the discovery that whales use song to communicate. This significant research has given us an understanding of the complexity of these wondrous animals and the importance of ocean management and research. Please join us and hear Dr. Payne speak on the exciting research he has been involved with for the last 30 years, behavior of whales in the wild.

  • 1614-Adriaen Block, representing the Dutch, sails up the Connecticut River.
  • 1633-The Dutch erect a fort, the House of (Good) Hope, on the future site of Hartford.
  • 1636-Thomas Hooker and company journey from Newtown (Cambridge), Massachusetts to found Hartford.
  • 1662-John Winthrop, Jr. obtains a charter for Connecticut.

  • 1764-Connecticut Courant the oldest American newspaper in continuous existence to the present, launched at Hartford by Thomas Green.
  • 1795-First insurance company incorporated as the Mutual Assurance Company of the City of Norwich.
  • 1806-First important English dictionary in United States published by Noah Webster.
  • 1840's and 1850's-Peak of whaling from Connecticut ports and especially from New London.
  • 1846-Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, the first life insurance company, chartered in Connecticut.
  • 1881-Storrs Agricultural College founded (became University of Connecticut in 1939).
  • 1900-First United States Navy submarine constructed by Electric Boat Co.
  • 1901-First American state law regulating automobile speeds.

Department of Environmental Protection
The mission of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is to conserve, improve and protect the natural resources and environment of the State of Connecticut in such a manner as to encourage the social and economic development of Connecticut while preserving the natural environment and the life forms it supports in a delicate, interrelated and complex balance.
Council on Environmental Quality
The Council's primary functions include:
  • Submittal to the Governor of an annual report on the status of Connecticut's environment
  • Review of state agencies' construction projects
  • Investigation of citizens' complaints and allegations of violations of environmental laws.

Long Island Sound Estuaries Project

The Long Island Sound NEP has demonstrated innovative technologies to remove nitrogen from sewage treatment plant discharges. Local trials in Connecticut and New York show that these technologies are quite successful with either mechanical aeration or diffused air systems.
