An Ocean Fair

An ocean fair, featuring a marine technology pavilion, environmental
information booths with hands-on family activities, continuous live
entertainment including music, storytelling and a puppet show; and live
broadcasts from a deep sea research submersible. The fair will be located in
the Custom House Plaza, nest to Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey (an easy walk
from the tented pavilion where the closing session will take place).

Navy/NOAA Weather and Oceanography Open House

See tomorrow's worldwide weather and ocean forecasts made today! Open House
at the compound of the Naval Postgraduate School annex on Airport Road where
all three agencies, the National Weather Service, the Fleet Numerical
Meteorology and Oceanography Center, and the Naval Research Laboratory are
co-located. Numerous displays of weather and oceanographic products and
animations, including El Niño, ocean and atmospheric forecasts, and satellite
imagery will be shown on a wide array of state-of-the-art display terminals.
Static displays, and formal
lectures/informal presentations will also be available. Look for additional
information in your Welcome Packet at the Conference.

Asilomar Tidepools and Coastal Dunes Tour

Experience first-hand some of the most magnificent tidepools on California's
central coast. Enjoy panoramic views of the spectacular Pacific shoreline
from the tops of 50-foot-high, windswept coastal dunes, escorted by
experienced BAY NET naturalist guides. BAY NET, the Monterey Bay National
Marine Sanctuary Volunteer Network, is an innovative citizen-based volunteer
docent program with over 150 trained guides. A program of the Center for
Marine Conservation, a respected nation-wide marine conservation organization,
BAY NET's Sanctuary ambassadors have interacted with over 60,000 shoreline
visitors since their debut in 1995. Join us at 8:00am for an hour of tidepool
exploration, or stay for the full three hour adventure...truly magical!

California State Park Month Lecture Series
(co-sponsored with the Monterey Dunes Natural History Association)

In celebration of California State Park month, learn about parks from two
California State Park staff. Bud Getty, District Superintendent for Silverado
District, will talk about "Parks the World Over". Denzil Verardo, Deputy
Director for Administration for California Conservation Corps, will give a
presentation on "California State Park Origins".

Cannery Row Kayaking

Experience an intimate adventure on the ocean! Sea kayaking allows you to
explore the protected shoreline and gain a unique new perspective of sea
otters, seals, sea lions, sea birds, and kelp forests. Stay warm, dry and
safe in stable double sea kayaks while experienced guides and local marine
biologists show you the wonders of Monterey Bay. Novices are welcome. This
activity is fun and easy but fascinating for all levels of paddling
experience! All equipment & instruction provided.

Early Birding at Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ESNERR)

Elkhorn Slough is renowned for its fabulous birding. Enjoy an early morning
stroll with an expert birder who will help you spot and identify even the most
elusive birds. Binoculars are supplied.

Elkhorn Slough Safari

Elkhorn Slough Safari is an exciting way to visit this beautiful, natural
habitat and will provide excellent opportunities to view and photograph
wildlife close at hand, such as sea otters, harbor seals, and a variety of
shorebirds. These cruises include an in-depth look at various aspects of
slough ecology and fascinating history stories in the company of a naturalist
guide. Relax and enjoy a roomy, stable ride and complimentary refreshments on
our 27 foot pontoon boat, The Safari.

Exploring a Mudflat at Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve
(ESNERR)

Come see what goes on at the BOTTOM of an estuary during this low-tide
exploration into the unseen world of Elkhorn Slough. We'll provide boots and
digging equipment - you bring your sense of adventure.

Kayaking at Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ESNERR)

Enjoy sea otters, harbor seals, and a variety of birds from the serene,
"loons-eye view" of a sea kayak. We will begin at the mouth of Elkhorn slough
along the edge of Monterey Bay, then work our way up into this incredible
estuary at a leisurely pace. No paddling experience is required. We will
provide kayaks and equipment, a kayak guide, an Elkhorn Slough Naturalist, and
lunch.

Monterey Sportfishing and Whale Watching Cruises

Come aboard and join us for a 2.5 - 3 hour cruise as we search the nation's
largest marine sanctuary-Monterey Bay in search of the mighty blue whales,
orcas, humpbacks, minkes, dolphins, marine birds and other marine life. Or if
you prefer, schedule a boat trip to fish for rock cod and salmon.

National Steinbeck Center

The National Steinbeck Center in Salinas offers a VIP Behind the Scenes Tour
for any conferee interested in attending this event. The new 37,000 square
foot museum is dedicated to the life and works of author John Steinbeck and
will celebrate its official grand opening on June 27th. VIP's and conferees
will be invited to preview the permanent exhibit gallery which includes a
window into Cannery Row, as well as a CD-ROM that explores many of his written
works. Lunch is also available in the Steinbeck House nearby, which is the
home of his birthplace and childhood.

Natural History Trip on the Bay Aboard the O'Neill Boat

Conferees and their families will get a natural history tour of the bay aboard
the O'Neill catamaran. O'Neill, a local surfing legend, offers tours with
Sanctuary Stewards to interpret the rich marine life and history of Monterey
Bay.

Nature and Fishing Excursion

O'Neill Ocean Odyssey Boat Trip

This boat trip is an opportunity for conferees and the press to observe the
O'Neill Ocean Odyssey School Sails program aboard the O'Neill boat, a 65 foot
catamaran. Santa Cruz County school children partake in this two hour marine
education program, which consists of three stations - navigation, science, and
ecology.

Sardine Cannery Tour

The tour will begin at the unloading station in Moss Landing to view the
unloading, icing, and trucking of the fish. Then, we will proceed to the new
Salinas fish processing plant to view the cutting and freezing operation, the
freezing and bagging lines, and also the cold storage facility. Next we will
tour the new canning plant, including the cutting, packing, cooking, labeling
and shipping of the canned products. Finally, we will tour the waste handling
equipment and explain the process of taking byproducts and making liquid fish
fertilizer and fish proteins for fish farming and animal feeds. To top it off
- enjoy a seafood lunch!

Save Our Shores Beach Clean-up

Save Our Shores (SOS) will host a beach clean-up event at Del Monte Beach,
Monterey. The public as well as conference attendees will be invited to join
two bilingual third grade classes. This event will fulfill community outreach
hours for the classes which are required by O'Neill's for participating in the
Ocean Odyssey Marine Education Program aboard O'Neill's yacht. Gloves, bags,
collection data cards and a briefing on a safe clean-up will be provided. We
will have a picnic lunch after the event.

Tour at Long Marine Laboratory

The Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz
will hold an Open Laboratory day at Long Marine Lab to offer a behind the
scenes tour of a working marine research lab. See the public aquarium, and
displays of the diverse types of marine research underway. Also learn about
research projects studying marine mammals, including dolphins, sea lions and
elephant seals.

Watershed Walk at Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ESNERR)

Join Elkhorn Slough Foundation Director, Mark Silberstein, for a fun and
informative first-hand view of how coastal stewardship affects a healthy
ocean. We will begin our journey at the Reserve Visitor Center and then
carpool to several nearby sites to discuss habitat restoration, traditional
and alternative land use practices, and a variety of non-point source
pollution issues.
